Most people familiar with Armenia are aware of Lake Sevan. And this location on the shores of Lake Sevan is a not-so-mainstream destination that is worth introducing, as it is quite remarkable for its location, history, and picturesque views.
Location and setting: The monastery is located on a promontory, a small peninsula out into the lake near the village of the same name, Hayravank, and its impressive, elevated position opens a magnificent view of the lake, typical of many Armenian medieval monasteries.
The main church is a cruciform domed structure built between the 9th and 12th centuries, built of dark volcanic tuff common in the region. Like many Armenian churches of its era, it has a relatively austere exterior, with finely carved khachkars (cross-stones) nearby.
Because it attracts fewer visitors than Sevanavank (which is closer to Sevan town and easier to reach), Hayravank tends to have a quieter and more philosophical feel; some travelers actually prefer it for that reason.
