There is a unique place in Yerevan that has been very popular since Soviet times until nowadays, it is the Yerevan Children’s Railway. If you want to involuntarily move to Soviet times, the right decision would be to visit the Yerevan Children’s Railway and find yourself in the 1960s.
The breath of Soviet times in Yerevan Children’s Railway
The children’s railway has been operating since 1937, and the current locomotive and wagons are coming from the 1960-70s. The Soviet interior is not dangerous as such, it just does not really motivate, and it is not so childish 🙂
Of course, they have been painted and cosmetically updated many times during this period, but the railway building, the railway, the interior of the area, the aura and other elements have remained as they were in the 1960s.
They really need to be seen, and many may enjoy it as much as I do. We do not know when the children’s railway will be renovated (maybe very soon), we will miss the opportunity to enjoy these exotic views.
I really advise tourists visiting Armenia to visit the Yerevan Children’s Railway and move to Soviet times. In addition to the railway, there are many modern (non-Soviet) attractions in the area: autodrome, happy hills, carousels, water attractions, and you can have a good time here.
The train parked in Yerevan Children’s Railway station named “Hayrenik”
Previously, the station chief’s duty room, the telegraph office, the health room and the cash register were located in the station building.
Yerevan Children’s Railway – One of many children’s railways that existed in the USSR and continued functioning after its breakup in post-Soviet states
There were large pools of water, fountains, a reading room, a dance and sports playground, a playroom, a laughter room, kiosks, a cafeteria, etc. on the playground. A large statue of Stalin was placed on the hill leading to the station from the playground.

The children’s railway connects the city center with two tunnels. Alexander Tamanyan considered that Hrazdan gorge by its nature should serve as a recreation area.
At present, the train passes by the non-functioning “Joy” station and stops at the “Pioneer” station. Since it does not work either, people stay in their places and the train returns back to “Hayrenik” station.
